Steps for Coming up With a Wish List for Your New Home

Are you happy in your current home? Do you wish to change your living situation and don’t know where to start?

You need to set time aside and identify your exact needs before coming up with a checklist for your new home. Only after you know what the dream looks like can you be able to find a home that suits your exact needs.

It is easier to explain the kind of home you want by just generalizing about wanting a large and spacious house. However, to better point out your dream house, you have to think specifically about the kind of dwelling you want. For example, the size, design, and if you want an older home that was built in the late 1900s.

This article highlights some key tips and points on questions that aim to help you identify your likes and dislikes in your current dwelling place and help you find a more comfortable and pleasing home.

1. Your current financial situation

Understanding and accepting your financial situation is the first thing to consider before searching for a home. The real estate business like in a competitive market and your financial wiggle room is what makes all the difference. Organizing your budget and determining how much money you have will help you state the needs for your new home more clearly.

Ask yourself the following questions for a transparent view:

  • Are you pre-qualified for a loan agreement?
  • What’s your target price?
  • Do you have enough savings for the deposit and anticipated repairs?
  • Do you plan on remodeling or doing slight renovations or are you okay with a fully renovated home?

2. What is your current lifestyle?

You probably already have a picture-perfect image of your apartment in mind or you probably don’t have a clue where to start. Highlighting your current lifestyle and the basic needs required in your home is another good place to start. Establish the things you love about your current home and what you would prefer to change or add to your future home. Ask yourself whether:

  • You need extra space for a nursery or a home office;
  • You need a fenced yard for the sake of your pets;
  • Wheelchair access is needed;
  • You require parking space or street parking will work just fine;
  • You plan to shift in the next 1 to 2 years.

3. Choose a home type of your liking

Once you have all the aforementioned factors figured out, now you can go ahead and select a home of your preferred style and type. Be on the lookout for homes in the market around the neighborhood you wish to live in. Moreover, you can use relevant keywords to help you narrow your search. Quiz yourself on the following:

  • How many floors do you want?
  • Do you wish to purchase a condo, a family home, or a city house?
  • Do you want a historic home?
  • How many guest rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms do you wish to have in the house?
  • Which floor finish do you want?
  • Which architectural style do you prefer?
  • Do you wish to have an outdoor space?
  • Do you enjoy spending time in the yard or taking care of a garden?

4. Choose your preferred location

When selecting a new home, it is important to consider your surroundings. You may be considering shifting to a new house but in the same neighborhood or shifting to an entirely new environment. You can decide to paint your new apartment to introduce a new ambiance and a fresh look. You can also decide to add an extension to increase the size of your backyard. Ask yourself:

  • Do you prefer living in a rural, urban, or suburban area?
  • What is your preferred city?
  • Do you want a view?
  • Do you take pleasure in community get-togethers and other activities?
  • Are there walking and bicycle pathways and parks around?

5. Take time to familiarize yourself with the neighborhood

Happy that you have found your perfect home? Well, before buying and settling down, you must take time to learn about your new neighborhood. You can go around exploring the neighborhood as you ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you content with your new neighborhood?
  • Where can you add space?
  • Are you happy with the natural lighting and placement of windows and doors?
  • Is there enough parking space?
  • Are you at peace with the layout of your home?

Document your findings and match them against your wish list. This will help guide you on any changes to make to fit your must-haves. Take time to adjust to the new feeling and examine anything that you might have left out.

Minor errors can be fixed using paint or the replacement of staged furniture. Moreover, once you identify the type of home you want, it will be easier to partner with a real estate company to help you find the best home.
